Opening Line Contest Winner

Opening Lines. You can't have a story without them. (Can you hear your creative writing teacher in the background? What about the middle and the end?) Forget about her for now, all we asked for were opening lines and we got them. Plenty of them. The following is the best of the bunch.

First place and winner of $25 cash plus $80 worth of software is awarded to Jayide M. Alexander of Davenport, Iowa, USA for:

She walked with one foot in this world, the other in the next, now and then losing her balance.

Jane Ulrich of Durango, Colorado, USA wins second place plus $25 worth of software for her entry:

Elvin Lacroix lay in a pool of black stickiness.

Third place and winner of $25 worth of software goes to Jerri McCloud of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA for:

Standing under the giant tent bulging with flowers and two caskets in the middle, smiling-smiling at the funeral of their parents, sadness masked, suppressed cries, unaware of the hell that was about to begin with the statement, "what to do with these two little girls."
